Did you feel like your Facebook news feed was dominated by posts about the Word Cup Final on Sunday? Well, it was. According to Facebook, Germany’s extra time victory over Argentina is officially the biggest sporting event in the history of Facebook.

With 280 million interactions (posts, comments, likes) from 88 million users globally, there was more chatter on Sunday afternoon surrounding this World Cup final than any single game in sports history.

It surpassed Super Bowl XLVII, which garnered 245 million interactions.

According to Facebook, the most-engaged users were young men (18-24), American, and discussing Germany’s goal scorer Mario Götze and Argentina’s Lionel Messi.

Last week, Germany’s embarrassing pummeling of Brazil broke Twitter records, becoming the most tweeted-about single sports game in the social network’s history with 35.6 million total tweets. Sunday’s final match was incredibly popular with 32.1 million total tweets, but failed to break the record set the previous week.

A fitting end to an enjoyable World Cup.
