Microsoft’s HoloLens 2 is receiving a major upgrade, with Windows 11 coming to the headset by the end of June.

HoloLens is Microsoft’s mixed reality headset at the center of its multiverse strategy. Windows 11 will bring a number of benefits, including improved security, Teams call, 3D annotations, and more.

The update will also give developers new tools that will make it easier to develop their applications for the HoloLens, according to Microsoft’s Robin Seiler:

In addition, as part of the upgrade, we’re excited to share that the latest developer tools, like Microsoft Edge WebView2 control, will now be available in preview on HoloLens 2. This gives dev teams the ability to embed web technologies (including HTML, CSS and JavaScript) into their native applications.

The headset is already being used in real-world applications, with Microsoft pointing to Porsche Cars North America as an example:

With HoloLens 2 and Dynamics 365 Guides, technicians at Porsche Cars North America dealerships can now view the world around them in 3D while connecting with a remote expert who can support highly technical service requests. This technology also allows Porsche dealership technicians to view 3D holograms of a car and participate in remote interactive training classes. Upskilling and retaining top talent is now more cost-efficient, and technical services take less time while still meeting the company’s high bar for quality and exceptional customer service.

Windows 11 is an optional upgrade. Those who prefer Windows 10 will be able to stay on it.
