Will Facebook Be Destroyed on November 5th?

What would you do if Facebook was no more? Tweet more? I bet Google+ would open up invites even more in the event of a total Facebook collapse.

We all might be faced with that reality, says hacktivist group Anonymous. They have begun #OpFacebook, a specifc AnonOps that has this stated goal:

Your medium of communication you all so dearly adore will be destroyed

Anonymous, who have tackled various organizations from Sony to the leadership in Syria, is now apparently setting their sights on the world’s largest social network. Why are they doing this? It’s all about privacy and information they say –

Facebook has been selling information to government agencies and giving clandestine access to information security firms so that they can spy on people from all around the world. Some of these so-called whitehat infosec firms are working for authoritarian governments, such as those of Egypt and Syria.

Everything you do on Facebook stays on Facebook regardless of your “privacy” settings, and deleting your account is impossible, even if you “delete” your account, all your personal info stays on Facebook and can be recovered at any time. Changing the privacy settings to make your Facebook account more “private” is also a delusion.

The takedown is scheduled for November 5th, a date with a bit of significance tied to it (Guy Fawkes night – indulge yourself)

“Facebook is the opposite of the antisec cause,” they say. An Anonymous Twitter account, @OP_Facebook, has been set up with the bio reading “Lulz Boat.” The only tweet so far is a link to this YouTube video –

A quick Twitter search for the hashtag #OpFacebook gives you a steady stream new tweets. The top tweet for the tag is from one of the Anonymous accounts, @GroupAnon. They make it known that not everyone within Anonymous is behind the scheduled takedown –

FYI – #OpFacebook is being organised by some Anons. This does not necessarily mean that all of #Anonymous agrees with it. | #AnonOps 7 hours ago via web · powered by @socialditto

Could Anonymous really destroy Facebook? I guess we will just have to wait and see.
