WhatsApp continues its reign as the undisputed leader in online messaging platforms, with the app crossing the 3 billion monthly user threshold.
While there are a number of online communication platforms and messaging apps—such as Signal, iMessage, Telegram, and Google RCS Messages—WhatsApp continues to be the 800lb gorilla in the space. The platform enjoys near ubiquity in many parts of the world, being the primary form of communication for many users.
Meta revealed the milestone as part of its Q1 quarterly results conference, via TechCrunch. The company also says that WhatsApp is the company’s biggest driver of AI interaction.
“We see people engage with Meta AI from several different entry points. WhatsApp continues to see the strongest Meta AI usage across our family of apps,” Meta’s CFO, Susan Li, said during the call.
“We hope to become the leader over time [in the U.S. messaging market], but we’re in a different position there than we are in most of the rest of the world on WhatsApp. So I think that the Meta AI app as a standalone is going to be particularly important in the United States to establish leadership in — as the main personal AI that people use. But we’re going to keep on advancing the experiences across the board in all of these different areas,” CEO Mark Zuckerberg added.
Meta AI’s button is prominently displayed in WhatsApp, a decision that many users have found controversial and alarming. Given WhatsApp’s focus on encrypted communication, some users have questioned the privacy implications of having an AI embedded in the app, able to monitor communications and learn from them.
While Meta clearly has no intention of walking back its decision to include AI in WhatsApp, the company has made concessions in an effort to reassure users, giving them the ability to block Meta AI from accessing specific conversations.
Based on the level of AI engagement with WhatsApp, Meta clearly believes it has a hit with WhatsApp AI integration and is likely to continue looking for ways to integrate it even more.
