As if the Earth does not have enough environmental problems to deal with already, especially with the recent tornadoes that northeast America just experienced, there may be another anomaly coming that we might have to deal with… a solar storm! According to the Space Weather Prediction Center @ NOAA, a trusted source with space-related information, the sun erupted this past Tuesday evening, and the effects should start smacking the Earth at approximately 7 AM EST on Thursday (tomorrow).
Solar storms are known to have three ways that they can possible disrupt technology on earth: magnetic, radio, and radiation interference. With this in mind, there may be a slight possibility that intermittent power outages may occur with thanks to the geomagnetic storm that may occur.
“Such a CME could result in a severe geomagnetic storm, causing aurora at low latitudes, with possible disruption to high frequency radio communication, global positioning systems (GPS), and power grids.”
Some news networks are already starting (or attempting to) communicate pandemonium to the public with “the end of the life as we know it” (seen below). This was also the premise of Y2K back in 1999.
To keep up with information about the upcoming solar flare, if you are a Twitter user, be sure to follow @solarstormwatch.
The Twitter community has been active reacting to the news of the solar flare, and I have provided some of their tweets below:
If u haven’t read about massive solar storm warnings from NASA for late 2012 that would wipe out US power for months you should..scary stuff
I’d really love to be able to say I missed work because of the solar storm. Please power grid, fail.
Solar storm tomorrow? Could mess up power and communication? Greeeeat
i bet anonymous is behind the giant impending solar storm and that that is how they will shut down the power grid
What do you think of this upcoming solar storm? Do you think we are crying wolf like we did with Y2K, or should we be taking this more seriously? Please leave your feedback below in this post’s comments section.
