KYIV, Ukraine — Ukraine has launched a grant program to develop combat humanoid robots. The initiative signals long-term ambitions in a war where unmanned systems already deliver striking results. Yet early tests and operational data point to a simpler truth. Wheeled and tracked machines outperform their legged counterparts today.
The Brave1 platform, launched by six ministries and now housed under the Defense Ministry, announced the funding push on July 2, 2026. Grants can reach more than ₴100 million. Officials framed the move as part of a global race. “We are in a global robotics race,” said Andriy Hrytsenyuk, who leads Brave1. He added that robots hold “great military value.”
Defense Minister Mykhailo Fedorov put it more bluntly. “Technology fights technology,” he declared. The phrase captures Ukraine’s approach since the full-scale invasion began. Drones first. Then ground robots. Now the hunt for machines that walk like soldiers.
But don’t expect Terminator. Think Wall-E. That’s the assessment from analysts and the data itself. TechRadar laid out the gap in stark terms. Wheeled and tracked robots completed more than 66,000 missions in 2026 alone. Humanoids such as the Phantom MK-1 manage just two to three hours of operation. Infantry patrols last eight to 24 hours. The mismatch is obvious.
Tests Reveal Practical Limits
Foundation Future Industries sent two Phantom MK-1 units to Ukraine in February 2026. The San Francisco startup, backed by investors including Eric Trump, designed the robots for both commercial and military roles. They carried out logistics tasks in dangerous areas. Results showed promise alongside clear constraints.
The MK-1 offers a 20-kilogram payload. It lacks waterproofing. Battery life falls short for sustained operations. Balance issues surface. AI can hallucinate or exhibit bias. Jamming and data-capture risks loom. “The trial operation … has shown potential for use, but there are current limitations to real deployment,” reported Militarnyi.
CEO Sankaet Pathak remains optimistic. The company plans to ship upgraded Phantom Mk2 units later in 2026. Those versions promise “superhuman” capabilities. Payload capacity could double. Fall tolerance jumps from 12-15 Gs to around 100 Gs. A 3-kilowatt-hour battery enters the design. Pathak told Euronews that weaponization testing could begin “as early as next year.” He pushed back against Hollywood imagery. “I think we have this psychological reaction, which is like the Terminator, but the reality is if you really think about it from a practical sense, it’s not really like that.”
Pathak argued humanoids shine in precision missions. “Humanoids only make sense when your mission objective is more precision, essentially trying to make sure you don’t destroy infrastructure, hurt civilians, do the best of your ability as you can accomplish a very complex mission.” Bombs handle destruction cheaper. Robots handle nuance. And he sees the broader trend. “I do think it has become increasingly dangerous for soldiers to be on land and on the ground.”
Foundation holds $24 million in U.S. military research contracts. American pilots focus on handling tasks, not firing weapons. Ukrainian tests include weaponization questions. The BBC noted the contrast. BBC reported Pathak’s view that hundreds of thousands of AI-driven humanoids could one day form a ground force deterrent. Yet he conceded battlefield deployment sits “all well in the future.”
Simpler systems deliver now. CNN documented the shift in May. President Volodymyr Zelensky stated that unmanned machines conducted 22,000 missions since January 2026. In April they captured a Russian position without any human troops involved. “Back then, war was somehow more, shall we say, masculine,” one brigade commander told the network. “Now, technology decides everything. There is no going back.”
Units such as NC13 in the Third Assault Brigade operate four-wheeled explosive carriers. Others mount machine guns on tracked chassis. Resupply robots ferry ammunition under netting. Operators sit in gamer chairs, directing strikes while reconnaissance drones feed video. One soldier recalled the enemy reaction. “When we deployed the robot against the enemy, they simply panicked; they were crawling around, pressing themselves against the ground, and simply didn’t know what to do.”
These efforts saved lives. The NC13 unit’s 164 assaults equated to work that would have required 2,300 troops. Roughly 1,000 Ukrainian lives were preserved. Ukraine aims to inflict 35,000 Russian casualties per month. British intelligence estimates place total Russian deaths near 500,000. The unmanned edge contributes. Russia appears strained. Recruitment grows harder. Tactics shift toward defense.
But And. The humanoids remain experimental. Their bipedal form matches human environments. Doors, stairs, tools all fit. Quadrupeds and wheels move faster over rough terrain, carry more, and run longer on the same power. Ukraine’s experience echoes lessons from other conflicts. Israel deploys remote weapons stations. The U.S. tests armed ground vehicles. None rely on humanoids at scale.
Breaking Defense highlighted the trend at Eurosatory 2026. Ukrainian firms displayed combat-proven unmanned ground vehicles. More than 40 manufacturers showed up. Federico Borsari of the Center for European Policy Analysis credited Ukraine’s three years of experimentation. “Ukraine leads in this space because it has an invaluable three years of battlefield testing and experimentation.”
Ethical questions follow. UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres labeled lethal autonomous weapons “killer robots.” Negotiations continue on a treaty to ban them under the Convention on Certain Conventional Weapons. Pathak believes existing international humanitarian law covers humanoids. They won’t differ from armed drones already in use.
AI reliability poses another hurdle. World models built from video and simulation help robots predict outcomes. Yet real-world uncertainty confounds them. Open-source models risk misuse for “AI terrorism,” Pathak warned. Self-improving, self-replicating systems remain distant.
So what comes next? Ukraine will fund humanoid projects. Some prototypes may reach the front in limited roles. Logistics first. Reconnaissance later. Combat applications could emerge by 2027 if Mk2 delivers. Yet the bulk of robotic missions will stay with proven wheeled platforms. They scale easier. They cost less. They survive longer.
Foundation leases commercial Phantoms for about $100,000 per year. Military buyers pay similar rates. Production goals reach 40,000 units by the end of 2027. Those numbers sound ambitious. Battlefield data suggests patience is required. Simpler technology wins today. The humanoid future waits for better batteries, tougher joints, and smarter code.
One Ukrainian engineer put it well. “The key is not the vehicles, the key is minds and how they plan it, how they connect communication between vehicles, between operators.” Technology matters. Integration matters more. Ukraine has mastered the latter with drones and ground bots. Humanoids must now prove they belong in that network. Until they do, expect more Wall-E than Terminator on the front lines.
