Twitter's Digits Gets Update With Heavily Requested Features

Back in October, Twitter launched its mobile app development platform Fabric, which is made up of three modular kits, including a Twitter kit, which includes Digits. Digits allows people to sign into apps using their phone number. As the company explained at the time:

It’s built on Twitter infrastructure so you don’t have to worry about managing multiple relationships with carriers and SMS interchanges. Digits is fully themeable so that it fits the user experience you’ve designed for your app. Digits won’t post anything on your user’s behalf since it isn’t tied to their social network accounts, including Twitter. And with Digits, your apps are ready for global adoption: it’s available immediately in 216 countries and in 28 languages, on iOS, Android and the web.

Digits also solves a number of issues for your users. Since Digits uses a phone number, there’s no need for users to remember complex passwords or usernames and all they have to share is a phone number to get started in your app.

On Tuesday, Twitter announced an update to Digits adding two new features, which the company says have been highly requested by both users and developers.

For one, users can now update the phone number they use to authenticate their account, so Digits can "manage the entire user lifecycle," as the company puts it. Secondly, users can sign into apps via text and voice.


As a Twitter spokesperson tells WebProNews, "But if the SMS fails to go through, Digits will now be able to send users their verification code via voice as a backup. This keeps onboarding users as simple and reliable as possible so they can get straight to using their favorite apps."


You can upgrade Digits to the latest version within your Fabric Mac app / Android IDE plugins to enable voice verification. The company says it is experimenting on web and iOS in certain countries, and will open it to more countries in the future
