Things got a little too real in Tombstone, Arizona this past weekend as two people at a reenactment were shot with actual bullets.

Tombstone, Arizona is home to one of the most famous shootouts of all time – the Gunfight at the O.K. Corral. The episode has been played out countless times on screen, as many are familiar with the story of Wyatt Earp, Doc Holiday, the Clantons, and more.

Most of the town’s revenue comes from tourism, and every 2nd, 4th, and 5th Sunday the Tombstone Vigilantes are part of that draw.

But on Sunday, things went awry when one of the actors accidentally left live rounds in his gun.

According to the Tombstone Marshal’s Office, one member shot another in the “upper groin” area. He was flown to a Tucson hospital where he underwent surgery to extract the bullet.

Officials say the actor showed up late and didn’t have his gun properly inspected before the reenactment kicked off.

“Tombstone takes pride in the safety and security of its townspeople and tourists alike and the citizens of Tombstone can be assured that stringent safety protocol will be enforced prior to allowing any further gunfight skits,” the town’s Marshal’s Office said in a statement.

In response to the accident, Tombstone Mayor Dusty Escapule has announced that they are drawing up new rules for reenactments.

From the New York Times:

Escapule says the gunfight re-enactment industry in Tombstone is largely unregulated, and that’s why the town is drafting an ordinance that would provide more rules to protect actors and the public.

The mayor says all gunfights are now on hold as the investigation unfolds.

A bystander was also hit with either a ricochet or shrapnel. She refused treatment. Stray bullets also struck some businesses.
