Sorry mean girls, you won’t be seeing a Mean Girls sequel in the near future. According the Tina Fey, there are no plans to make a sequel to the film, but the cast may be getting back together for a 10 year reunion.
Tina Fey wrote and starred in the film along with Lindsay Lohan. The movie tells the story of a new girl named Cady who has been homeschooled all of her life while living in Africa with her parents. Cady’s parents move her to a big city where she enrolls in a public school and instantly becomes popular.
The popular clique of girls becomes jealous of Cady and although they welcome her into their group, they also do mean things behind her back to sabotage her popularity. This motivates Cady to become a mean girl herself to get back at the popular clique.
The film was a big hit, especially with high school girls and is still popular and funny 10 years later. Tina Fey and Lindsay Lohan appeared on Jimmy Fallon’s first “Tonight Show” last month and discussed the film. Both agreed that a cast reunion was necessary, but a sequel was not likely. Fey said that it would be more like the cast enjoying some hot wings together and talking about the first film.
“I said to her [Lohan], ‘Oh, I think someone may call us about doing some kind of reunion because next month is the 10th anniversary of the movie.’ And so really … if everyone’s around we might try to do some kind of like panel discussion, but it’s not like another movie. At most, it would be like a panel discussion with a plate of hot wings. It’s definitely not a movie,” Fey said.
She continued, “It’s been 10 years. You can tell when you look at me.”
Mean Girls 2 was made several years after the original Mean Girls but it did not include the same cast or story line and was not as popular as the first film.
While a movie sequel is not likely, Mean Girls fans may be excited to learn that Fey is working on a spin-off musical. The musical is still in the early stages of planning, but could be ready within the next year.
