The Oculus Rift started out as a simple concept – bring virtual reality into the 21st century. After using one myself, I can say that the team has achieved that. Now developers are trying out new ideas with the Rift that are borderline ridiculous.
SkyDIEving is an Oculus Rift game all about falling to your death. Playing it while sitting down or standing up is probably already a pretty terrifying experience, but the folks at Vaecon took it one step further. They strapped a person into a harness and hung him from a tree so that he could get the full SkyDIEving experience.
This is just another example of how awesome and potentially game changing the Oculus Rift will be for interactive experiences. We’ve already seen developers transporting people to the Tuscan countryside or allowing them to relive the French revolution. One developer even combined the Rift with the Razer Hydra to make a motion controlled cover shooter.
The innovation being brought about by the Oculus Rift is just getting started. It’s only going to get better as more developers, including John Carmack, join the effort of bringing virtual reality to more people.
