The Demographic Disparities That Demand Attention

However, the accuracy of consumer-grade devices varies, and abnormal readings should always be followed up with clinical-grade testing.

Home blood pressure monitors represent another accessible technology that can improve cardiovascular awareness. The American Heart Association has endorsed home monitoring as a valuable complement to office-based measurements, noting that it can help identify “white coat hypertension” (elevated readings caused by the stress of a medical visit) and “masked hypertension” (normal readings in the office but elevated readings at home). Validated, cuff-based monitors are available for as little as $25 to $50, making them one of the most cost-effective tools in preventive cardiology.

The Economic and Human Cost of Delayed Detection

The financial toll of heart disease in the United States is staggering.
