Artists Ben West and Felix Hayes have created this digital project that matches a picture with every word in the English dictionary.
The Google Book contains 21,000 images, and is made up of the first image that shows up on Google when each word is searched.
The artists used two PHP scripts to create the book. One takes a text list of dictionary words and downloads the image in secquence. The second arranges them in columns and outputs them in PDF.
West spoke with Creative Applications Network about the project: “Conceptually it’s whatever you make of it. It’s really an unfiltered, uncritical record of the state of human culture in 2012. I would estimate about half of the book is revolting medical photos, porn, racism or bad cartoons.”
They are looking to make a run of softcover editions. You can go to either artists pages to request one: Felix Hayes or Ben West.
