Sylvester Stallone grappled with boycotting the Oscars in light of the lack of diversity shown by Academy voters this year. After receiving his nomination for Best Supporting Actor for his role in Creed, he decided to ask his director his thoughts on the boycott.

Director Ryan Coogler is African-American, but he didn’t want Sylvester Stallone to boycott the event.

“I spoke with Ryan Coogler when this happened. I said, ‘Ryan how do you want to handle this? Because I really believe you are responsible for me being here,'” Stallone said. “I said, ‘If you don’t want me to go, I won’t.’ He said, ‘I want you to go.’ That’s the kind of guy he is. He wanted me to stand up for the film.”

There are some who believe Ryan Coogler, as well as Creed and its leading actor, Michael B. Jordan, were snubbed.

Sylvester Stallone holds out hope that the Oscars will become more diverse in the coming years.

“It’s a matter of time. Eventually, all talent will rise to the top. It’s a matter of getting a new paradigm, a new way of thinking,” he said.
