Stellantis and the British startup Wayve announced a strategic technology partnership on May 21, 2026. The deal brings Wayve’s AI Driver into the automaker’s STLA AutoDrive platform. First vehicles equipped with the system should reach North American roads in 2028. The initial offering targets supervised Level 2++ capability. Drivers gain hands-free operation in both highway and urban settings yet must stay alert and ready to intervene.
But speed defined this collaboration from the start. Wayve integrated its AI into a Stellantis vehicle prototype in less than two months. Engineers had the car driving within weeks. That pace stands out against the years often required for traditional autonomous systems to reach even limited deployment.
Wayve built its reputation on an end-to-end neural network. The software learns directly from camera and sensor data captured on the vehicle. It skips high-definition maps, specialized lidar rigs, and fixed hardware dependencies. The same model can run on whatever chips an automaker already installs. This flexibility appealed to cost-conscious companies. Nissan signed on earlier. Stellantis followed, drawn by the chance to add advanced driver assistance without massive retooling.
Alex Kendall, co-founder and CEO of Wayve, described the match in clear terms. “One of the amazing things about Stellantis is the global, massive scale they operate at, and the diversity of products they offer,” he told TechCrunch. “Our AI is so adaptable; we can generalize to the variety of products that they offer… because of the diversity of sizes, shapes of vehicles, different driving styles, different geographies they run in our AI is built to scale across them all.” He added that the system offers “a version of FSD that’s built on an AI model that is truly set up to generalize… capable of generalizing across different compute stacks, different sensors, different vehicles, shapes, and sizes.”
Ned Curic, chief engineering and technology officer at Stellantis, struck a similar note. “Combining our STLA AutoDrive platform with Wayve’s groundbreaking AI-first approach creates a genuinely intuitive and enjoyable hands-free driving experience,” he said in the joint release. Kendall echoed the sentiment. “This agreement marks an important next step for Wayve and Stellantis in scaling our technology together.”
The timing carries weight. Stellantis outlined plans during its investor day in Michigan to launch 11 new vehicles in North America by 2030. Seven will carry stickers below $40,000. Two will sit under $30,000. Whether Wayve’s software reaches those entry-level models remains unclear. Yet the startup’s pitch around efficiency and broad compatibility suggests it could fit across the lineup. The partnership builds on an earlier investment. Wayve closed a $1.2 billion Series D round in February 2026 that valued the company at $8.6 billion. Stellantis, Nissan, and Mercedes-Benz took part alongside Microsoft, Nvidia, and Uber. That capital gave Wayve resources to push both assisted-driving software for consumer cars and fully driverless systems for robotaxis.
Wayve already works with Nissan on assisted driving targeted for Japan by 2027. It also plans robotaxi trials with Uber and Nissan in Tokyo later this year. The Stellantis deal adds North America as a priority market and opens doors to Stellantis’s 14 brands, among them Jeep, Ram, Chrysler, Dodge, Peugeot, and Fiat. Scale matters here. Stellantis sold 6.4 million vehicles last year. Even modest adoption of the new system could put hundreds of thousands of AI-equipped cars on the road quickly.
Traditional autonomous vehicle programs leaned on detailed maps and rule-based software. They performed well in controlled areas but struggled when roads changed or conditions turned unfamiliar. Wayve trains its model on vast quantities of real-world video. The system learns to anticipate, react, and mimic human-like judgment. Proponents say this yields smoother behavior in dense city traffic or on poorly marked rural routes. Critics point out that neural networks can behave unpredictably in rare edge cases. Regulators still demand clear safety cases before they allow reduced driver oversight.
Stellantis frames the move as part of a broader push to deliver advanced driver-assistance systems that customers actually want. The company has invested heavily in its STLA platform architecture, which spans electric, hybrid, and combustion models. Adding a software-defined intelligence layer from Wayve fits the strategy of updating vehicles over the air and extending capability without hardware refreshes every few years.
Yet challenges remain. Supervised Level 2++ still requires the driver’s eyes on the road. Many owners already treat current Level 2 systems as set-and-forget, leading to misuse. Education campaigns and monitoring technology will matter. The companies have not disclosed financial terms of the contract. Nor have they named specific models for the 2028 debut. Those details will come later as integration work advances.
The announcement arrives amid rising interest in embodied AI for mobility. Investors poured record sums into autonomous startups in early 2026. Wayve’s approach, which treats driving as a prediction problem solvable by large models, mirrors progress in language and vision systems. If it delivers on generalization across continents and vehicle types, the technology could lower the cost barrier that has kept advanced automation out of mass-market cars.
For now the focus stays practical. Get a prototype running fast. Prove the system behaves predictably in American traffic. Gather data to refine the model. Then expand. Stellantis gains a credible path to hands-free features that feel natural rather than robotic. Wayve gains a major customer with global reach and a test bed spanning climates, road rules, and driver expectations. Both sides see the potential for higher levels of automation down the road. The 2028 launch marks an early milepost on that longer path.
