Sony has impressed with its line of Xperia smartphones. They don’t command the market share that other Android phone manufacturers do, but I would bet that they make just as good phones. If you’re an Xperia fan, you have reason to get excited today.
Sony has announced four new smartphones today to perhaps draw you over to their side of the smartphone market. The crazy thing is that one of these phones might actually do it. The first of these phones was actually first shown off at CES earlier this year, but we now get all the solid details for the device.
The Xperia ion HSPA is finally about to launch and it is one of the nicest Android phones the market has ever seen. It has a 4.6 inch 720p screen with a 1.5 GHz dual-core CPU. THe cameras are also pretty amazing with a 12MP rear camera capable of 1080p video with a front 1.2MP camera capable of 720p video. It will launch with Android 2.3, but will be upgraded to 4.0 soon after.
The specs are not the only thing that’s impressive about the device. The rear facing camera on the ion is able to take pictures with only one second in between each shot. Users can then display photos or video taken with the device on an HDTV using either HDMI or DLNA.
While the Xperia ion HSPA is definitely the flagship device, the other phones Sony has in the pipeline are also great for consumers on a budget. Next up is the Xperia Miro, a 3.5 inch display that’s powered by an 800 MHz Qualcomm processor. It also features front and rear cameras with the rear camera being set at 5MP. It’s also DLNA certified for sharing content between the phone and tablets or TVs.
The thing that sets the miro apart from the rest is that it’s essentially a Facebook smartphone. It has Facebook integration with contacts, pictures and music. While other phones have these features, Sony promises their phone to make the Facebook connectivity the core of the experience.
The last two phones are both under the Xperia tipo line. Both phones have the exact same specs that feature 3.2 inch display powered by an 800 MHz Qualcomm processor. What sets the tipo apart from the tipo dual is that the dual features dual SIM. This will allow you to use what is essentially two phones in one as you will be able to switch between the two on the fly.
As is standard, the tipo has its own uniqueness that sets it apart from the rest. Sony is going to be marketing this phone to those who don’t yet own a smartphone. It will ship with a dedicated set-up guide that will show people the ins and outs of the phone. It will also feature an app that keeps track of a user’s data usage.
While the ION HSPA will be lacking 4G, it still looks like a nice feature-rich phone. The other models seem to cater well to their individual markets as well. It remains to be seen if they’ll be able to compete more on the level of the Samsungs and Motorolas of the Android world.
