  • Earlier today it was revealed that overall PC shipments were down for yet another quarter, dropping 8.6% from the shipments seen in the third quarter of 2012. Despite the fact that this is the sixth consecutive quarterly decline for the PC industry, individual players have been increasing shipments and their market share. Lenovo in particular took the PC market crown from HP earlier this year, and managed to increase its third quarter shipments by 2.8% year-over-year.

Aside from the major manufacturers, some smaller players in the industry are growing even faster. Market research firm IDC today pointed to several local brands that are rising fast. The brands are all from emerging markets such as China and Brazil, which analysts believe will see the majority of the tech industry growth in the coming years.

Chinese brand Tongfang is singled out as the fastest-growing local brand so far this year. From January to August of this year, Tongfang has increased its shipments 10% – a significant statistic when placed next to the overall PC market’s 11.9% decline over the same period. The company is now ranks 12th for global PC shipments so far this year.

“Despite slower overall PC shipments in China, the commercial market and segments like education and government in particular continue to see significant demand, including revival of some delayed projects,” said Antonio Wang, associate director for Client System Research at IDC China. “Tongfang has been able to capitalize on this based on its customer relationships and winning projects, such as in the Qinghai province education order, China’s food and drug administration, and national tax administration in the third quarter.”

Other up-and-coming brands include Venezuela’s Canaima, Chinese company Haier, and Brazilian PC manufacturer Positivo Informatica. IDC ranks Positivo as the 11th largest PC manufacturer for 2013, as the company has seen a 2.9% increase in shipments so far this year. Like other companies on the local list, Positivo focuses much of its efforts in the enterprise, education, and governmental markets.
