Facebook’s second attempt to capitalize on the popularity of the ephemeral message (after the first one, Poke, failed), Slingshot, is now available internationally.
“Since we launched last week, we’ve heard from lots of people around the world who are excited to give Slingshot a try. Starting today, we’re expanding our initial launch and making Slingshot available internationally,” says the Slingshot team in a blog post. “This past week we’ve seen people share such terrific shots, face mashes and drawings. We can’t wait for what happens next!”
Slingshot officially launched last week, following an accidental rollout a week prior. The app, which allows users to send and receive images that disappear after a short amount of time (a la Snapchat), was met with mixed reviews.
One of the odd things about Slingshot is that Facebook has made it harder to receive messages by implementing an unlock feature. If you receive a ‘sling’ from a buddy, you have to send a ‘sling’ back in order to unlock the message. Until you do, it’ll simply appear as a pixellated blur in your message inbox.
When it launched, we talked about just how strange this really is.
But, unlike Poke, Slingshot is still alive and kicking. Now, users across the world can give it a try on both iOS and Android.
