Skype announced a new record today, and one that is even more interesting, considering the timing. 

"Almost exactly a week after we broke the 27 million barrier, we’ve done it again," says Skype’s Peter Parkes. "At approximately 1800 GMT today, there were over 28 million people online on Skype at the same time – a new record."

If 28 million seems like an odd number to make an announcement about, the fact that it only took a week to get another million is pretty significant, considering how long Skype has been around. 

So what’s Skype been up to? 

The other day, the company completed its acquisition of Qik, a popular mobile video service, which was already available on over 200 different phones, including devices running Android, iOS, Symbian, BlackBerry OS, and Windows Mobile. 

Earlier this month, Skype launched a new business version of its service with group video calling. The feature is specifically designed for businesses who are shifting to an anytime/anywhere workplace model to increase employee productivity and collaboration, a spokesperson for the company told WebProNews.  

At the end of 2010, Skype launched a new version of its app for iOS, which lets users make and receive free video calls from their iPhone, iPad, or iPod Touch. That may also have something to do with the service’s spike in popularity. 

This is all after millions of users lost their connections and experienced various other issues. Not a bad bounce-back.
