Shailene Woodley isn’t your typical celebrity actress. As a matter of fact, she may not even be like most people her age! The 23-year-old actress revealed some pretty interesting little-known facts about herself during a recent interview with The Daily Beast.
One of the most intriguing things the Divergent actress revealed about herself is that she doesn’t own a cell phone. She even went so far as to purport that she’s not big on technology.
“I’m not a big technology person. I don’t even have a smart phone. I don’t even have a cell phone!” the Descendants actress said. “If I were to have one, it would be a flip phone.”
Woodley explained that she opted to ditch her mobile device once she came to the realization that there’s “a bigger lack of camaraderie and community than there’s ever been.”
However, she did express that there is an advantage to being without a cell phone and having technology at her fingertips. The Secret Life of the American Teenager pointed out that she’s been able to brush up on her interpersonal communication skills.
“Since I got rid of my phone, [I’m] having to pull over and be like, ‘Hey, buddy—do you know how to get here?’ I’m talking to people more than I’ve ever talked to in my life because I no longer have that crutch,” she explained. “The more you get away from all the technological buzz, the more freedom you have.” (image) Woodley also revealed that she’s interested in developing her “survival skills.” Her desire to channel her survivor’s ingenuity is actually one of the characteristics that led to her being casted as Beatrice Prior, the protagonist in the Veronica Roth novel series.
“The producers asked me what I liked to do in my spare time and I told them I used to study how to survive in the wild—how to make shelter, build fire, and create weapons out of the ecosystem—but I live in a city, so it also got me thinking about urban survival skills,” she in reference to becoming self-sufficient.
Her self-sufficiency may be accredited to the fact that she’s a real nature girl at heart! Woodley expressed that she actually enjoys hiking in the mountains to collect natural spring water and foraging for berries. However, she also revealed her biggest fear which centers around the potentially harmful treatment to the environment.
“My biggest fear is that people aren’t going to realize in time that we are nature, and that we need to think about that fact and respect that fact,” the actress says. “People talk about global warming, the oceans, and the rainforest, and we need to be talking about it, but nothing’s going to change unless we change ourselves.”
