Selena Gomez took a long time in coming into her own as a former Disney child star.

In her early years, Selena Gomez seemed to only be identified as Justin Bieber’s girlfriend. After their breakup, life got a little lonely as she dealt with Lupus and went through chemo.

During her treatment, Selena Gomez dealt with widespread speculation and fantasies about why she was in “rehab”. But, at least she had friends to be there for her as she rebuilt her image and her life.

Now, Selena Gomez has solidly established herself as her own person and the love of a good friend was key.

Selena Gomez recently praised her good buddy Taylor Swift during an interview.

Wouldn't have it any other way! SHE WON!! Vid of the YEAR! So proud of all the ladies! That's what it's truly about!

She said, “My favorite thing about Taylor is her strength. She has the ability to be in any sort of room. Her presence is very strong. You can tell that she wears her heart on her sleeve, but she’s also really strong.”

Selena Gomez also spoke fondly about Taylor Swift last month.

She said, “Taylor makes me feel empowered, like I can trust new people.”

She added, “All of those girls are so dope. We ran around taking pictures, changing dresses, dancing, super-cliche girly stuff, but it rocked. The way she cares about women is so adamant. It’s pulling me out of my shell.”

And, even though Selena Gomez hasn’t followed the wild path of other former Disney stars like Miley Cyrus and Demi Lovato, she can understand them.

Selena Gomez said, “There’s not an ounce of me that doesn’t think that whatever they’re doing is right. I’ve been judged too much to even remotely go there. I hear them, genuinely.”

What do you think of Selena Gomez and her new-found identity as her own person?
