For years, the file-sharing divide between Android and Apple devices has been one of the most persistent annoyances in consumer technology. You’re at a dinner party, someone snaps a great group photo on an iPhone, and the Android users in the room are left waiting for a compressed version via text message. That friction is about to diminish — significantly.
Samsung has confirmed that its Galaxy devices will soon support Apple’s AirDrop protocol, enabling direct, high-speed file transfers between Samsung phones and iPhones without third-party apps or workarounds. The feature is expected to arrive through a software update in the coming months, according to reporting by Android Police.
This isn’t a rumor. It’s happening.
The Technical Foundation: How Cross-Platform AirDrop Actually Works
The development traces back to a broader industry initiative that’s been quietly building momentum. Apple announced at WWDC 2024 that it would open up aspects of its proprietary protocols to work with other devices, partly in response to regulatory pressure in the European Union under the Digital Markets Act. The company committed to making certain communication and sharing features interoperable with third-party platforms. AirDrop interoperability falls under that umbrella.
Apple’s AirDrop has traditionally relied on a combination of Bluetooth for device discovery and peer-to-peer Wi-Fi for the actual file transfer. That’s what gives it the speed advantage over Bluetooth-only solutions — large files, photos, and videos move in seconds rather than minutes. Samsung’s implementation will reportedly use the same underlying protocol stack, meaning transfers between Galaxy and iPhone devices should perform comparably to iPhone-to-iPhone AirDrop.
Samsung’s Quick Share, the company’s existing file transfer tool, will serve as the interface on the Galaxy side. Rather than building a separate app or requiring users to install anything new, Samsung is integrating AirDrop compatibility directly into Quick Share. When a Samsung user initiates a transfer, nearby Apple devices running iOS 18.4 or later should appear as available recipients, and vice versa.
That’s a smart design choice. It eliminates a learning curve for Samsung’s installed base of over 200 million active Galaxy smartphone users worldwide.
But the technical details raise questions. Will the cross-platform transfers support the same file types and sizes? Will there be encryption parity? Apple’s AirDrop uses TLS encryption for transfers, and Samsung has indicated Quick Share will maintain equivalent security standards for cross-platform exchanges. Still, independent security researchers haven’t yet had a chance to audit the implementation.
There’s also the matter of device discovery. AirDrop’s contact-based sharing — where you can restrict visibility to contacts only — relies on Apple’s iCloud infrastructure. How Samsung handles the contact-matching component across platforms remains somewhat unclear. Early indications suggest the cross-platform mode will function more like AirDrop’s “Everyone” setting, meaning devices will need to be in proximity and have sharing enabled.
Not perfect. But functional.
Why This Matters Beyond Convenience
The significance here extends well past the ability to send photos between phones. For enterprise environments, where mixed device fleets are common, the inability to quickly share files between iOS and Android has been a genuine productivity drain. IT departments have long relied on cloud-based workarounds — email attachments, Slack uploads, Google Drive links — for something that should be as simple as tapping a button. Cross-platform AirDrop support removes that friction point.
And it puts competitive pressure on Google. Android’s Nearby Share (now rebranded as Quick Share following a partnership between Google and Samsung announced in January 2024) was supposed to be Android’s answer to AirDrop. It works reasonably well between Android devices, but it has never bridged the gap to iOS. Samsung leapfrogging Google to establish direct interoperability with Apple is a notable power move within the Android world. It differentiates Galaxy devices from every other Android phone on the market.
Consider what this means for Samsung’s positioning. The company has spent years trying to carve out a premium identity that competes directly with Apple, not just with other Android manufacturers. Features like DeX, the S Pen, and Samsung’s own app store have all been part of that strategy. AirDrop compatibility adds another line to the spec sheet that no Pixel, OnePlus, or Xiaomi phone can currently match.
Google, for its part, hasn’t announced any similar plans. The company’s relationship with Apple on interoperability has been complicated — the two collaborated on RCS messaging support in late 2024, but that effort was driven largely by regulatory requirements and public pressure campaigns. File sharing hasn’t received the same attention.
So Samsung gets a head start. And in consumer electronics, timing matters enormously.
The move also reflects a broader shift in how tech companies think about proprietary features. The era of absolute walled gardens is eroding. Apple’s decision to open AirDrop wasn’t altruistic — the EU’s Digital Markets Act essentially forced the company’s hand on interoperability across several fronts, including messaging, browser defaults, and app distribution. But once the door is open, companies like Samsung are smart to walk through it quickly.
There are caveats. The initial rollout will likely be limited to newer Samsung devices — those running One UI 7.0 or later. Older Galaxy phones may not receive the update, which means the feature could be restricted to devices from the Galaxy S24 series onward, plus recent foldables and A-series models. Samsung hasn’t published a complete compatibility list yet.
Timing is also uncertain. Android Police reports the feature could arrive as early as a One UI 7.1 update, potentially in the second half of 2025. But Samsung’s software update cadence has historically been inconsistent, and carrier-specific delays in markets like the United States could push the actual availability date further out for some users.
The Competitive Ripple Effects
Apple’s willingness to let Samsung into the AirDrop fold also signals something about how Cupertino views the competitive threat. For years, AirDrop exclusivity was a selling point — a reason to stay within the Apple hardware family. By opening the protocol, Apple may be calculating that the convenience of cross-platform sharing actually pulls more users toward its services. If an Android user becomes accustomed to interacting with Apple’s sharing infrastructure, the psychological barrier to switching to an iPhone decreases.
Or Apple simply had no choice, given the regulatory environment. Probably both.
For consumers, the practical upside is clear. Fewer compressed images sent through messaging apps. Faster sharing of large video files. No more emailing documents to yourself as a bridge between devices. These are small quality-of-life improvements individually, but they add up — especially in households and workplaces where iPhones and Galaxy phones coexist.
The broader industry will be watching closely. If Samsung’s AirDrop integration performs well and drives measurable user engagement, expect other Android manufacturers to pursue similar arrangements. Xiaomi, which dominates in markets like India and Southeast Asia, would have strong incentive to follow. So would Google, which might feel compelled to bake AirDrop interoperability into stock Android rather than letting Samsung own the feature exclusively.
That would be a meaningful change in how the two dominant mobile operating systems relate to each other. For a decade, the assumption has been that iOS and Android exist as parallel universes with minimal overlap. RCS messaging cracked that wall. Cross-platform AirDrop could widen the breach considerably.
The file-sharing wars aren’t over. But the battle lines just shifted in a way that benefits the people who actually use these devices every day. And that’s the point.
