Samsung has at last addressed one of the most persistent headaches for Galaxy S26 Ultra owners. The company rolled out a targeted improvement in the One UI 9 Beta 4 that confines the privacy effect to picture-in-picture windows. No longer does enabling the feature for a YouTube video force the entire screen into a dimmed, color-shifted state.

The change comes after months of complaints. Users reported eye strain, headaches, fuzzy text and even a bizarre red stain on the display. Many traced the problems back to the very technology Samsung touted as a flagship differentiator. Android Central first highlighted the PiP-specific flaw on July 22, 2026. Leaker Ice Universe shared video proof the day before. “Heads up! Samsung has introduced a very useful upgrade to the Privacy Display feature on the Galaxy S26 Ultra in One UI 9,” the leaker posted. The example showed a minimized video staying private while the home screen returned to full brightness and normal viewing angles.

But the story starts earlier. When Samsung launched the S26 Ultra early in 2026 it introduced Flex Magic Pixel technology. This hardware-assisted system narrows the display’s viewing angles on demand. Activate it for apps, notifications or password fields and side viewers see nothing but a washed-out black panel. The feature works without a physical screen protector. It can toggle per app. Yet those gains carried costs.

Brightness drops. Colors shift. Text looks jagged. Some owners felt immediate discomfort. A Samsung community moderator acknowledged the eye strain and headache reports in March. An investigation followed. One user, AnthonyHershko, filed a formal bug report. Samsung replied that fixes and improvements would arrive soon. Sammy Fans covered the exchange on March 28, noting the new pixel arrangement powered the privacy mode but also triggered flickering and distortion for many.

By late March the problems had grown loud enough to affect sales. PhoneArena reported that more than 36 percent of polled readers decided against buying the phone because of display quality. Another 30 percent bought one yet experienced ongoing issues. Samsung responded with refunds and payments to discourage returns. First-generation features are often problematic, the site observed. This one clearly stung.

Then came the red screen reports. Users noticed a reddish tint or stain, especially on white backgrounds under bright light or at maximum brightness. The issue appeared after three or four months of use for some. Samsung pointed back to the Privacy Display software. A fix via software update was promised. Android Central detailed the red-screen saga just two days before the PiP fix article, on July 20.

The April 2026 firmware update delivered some calibration tweaks. It helped with flickering in certain conditions. Eye strain tied to the hardware pixel layout proved harder to solve. PWM dimming sat at 480Hz, lower than some rivals. The panel ran 8-bit color in places where 10-bit would have helped smoothness. Peak brightness fell off at wider angles even before privacy mode engaged. Owners who kept resolution at 1080p and used dark mode reported slight relief. Still the chorus of frustration continued on forums and Reddit.

Privacy Display itself relies on a clever trick. Wide-angle light-emitting subpixels are suppressed. Narrow-angle ones dominate. The result blocks shoulder surfers without extra hardware. Samsung let users apply the restriction selectively. That flexibility sounded ideal in marketing materials. Reality proved messier. Enable the mode for one app and the whole display paid the brightness penalty. Shrink that app to a floating PiP window and the penalty remained. Watching a private video while checking email became an exercise in squinting.

The One UI 9 Beta 4 update changes the equation. Now the privacy mask follows the PiP window alone. The rest of the interface renders at full brightness and standard angles. Color shifts disappear outside the protected area. The floating video stays hidden from the side while the home screen or other apps look normal. It’s a smarter implementation of the same underlying panel tech. Beta testers already praise the difference. The update bundles additional bug fixes as Samsung prepares the full One UI 9 release based on Android 17.

Industry watchers see the move as damage control. Samsung spent years refining its OLED panels. The S26 Ultra was supposed to showcase the next leap in usable screen tech. Instead early owners became unwitting testers. Community threads filled with screenshots of jagged text and red overlays. Some returned their devices. Others waited for patches. The company listened. It issued statements, ran investigations and now ships code that directly targets the most complained-about behavior.

Yet questions linger. Will future flagships carry similar privacy hardware without the early compromises? Can software alone mask hardware trade-offs in brightness and color accuracy? The S26 Ultra display still measures darker overall than the S25 Ultra in some tests. Peak output falls faster at angles. Those characteristics stem from the pixel layout chosen to enable on-demand privacy. Samsung has tuned the algorithms. It has not replaced the panel.

Owners who joined the One UI 9 beta program can test the PiP fix today. Wider release should follow in the coming weeks. For many the update arrives too late to prevent buyer’s remorse. For others it restores faith in a device they kept despite the flaws. The episode reveals how even a premium smartphone can stumble when a headline feature collides with everyday use.

And the red screen problem? Samsung says the same software update track will resolve it. No new hardware recalls or panel swaps appear necessary. That news should calm remaining holdouts. Still, the speed of the response, half a year after launch, shows how display complaints can snowball. Samsung moved from acknowledgment to code in stages. Each stage brought incremental relief. The latest beta marks the most meaningful step yet.

Competitors surely watched. Privacy screens have appeared on laptops for years. Bringing the concept to a flagship phone without a physical film was ambitious. Execution required balancing visibility, power consumption, manufacturing yield and user comfort. The Galaxy S26 Ultra proved the concept works. It also proved the first version needed refinement. Future iterations may widen the gap between marketing promise and daily reality.

Users on X continue to share setup tips for the privacy toggle even as the fix spreads. Many express relief that PiP no longer ruins the rest of the experience. A few still report minor color fringing in certain apps. The beta label means more polishing lies ahead. But for an issue labeled the device’s most annoying privacy display flaw, the change feels significant.
