Rode just made the iPhone the centerpiece of professional podcast video production. The Australian audio company announced the RodeCaster Video Core, a hardware-software system that lets creators use up to four iPhones as broadcast-quality cameras — all synced, switched, and mixed alongside Rode’s existing audio tools.

This isn’t a gimmick. It’s a serious bid to collapse the cost and complexity of multi-camera podcast production into a single, iPhone-powered workflow.

What the RodeCaster Video Core Actually Does

The Video Core is a new hardware unit that pairs with Rode’s companion iPhone app to turn multiple iPhones into switchable video sources. According to AppleInsider, the system supports up to four iPhones simultaneously, letting producers cut between camera angles in real time — live or for recording. The hardware handles video switching, while the iPhones handle capture using their native camera systems.

Think of it as a simplified video switcher purpose-built for podcasters, streamers, and small-scale content creators who don’t want to invest in dedicated broadcast cameras, capture cards, and a full production rig. The Video Core integrates directly with Rode’s RodeCaster audio mixers, meaning audio and video production happen in one unified setup.

That integration matters. A lot.

For years, podcast studios have relied on cobbled-together stacks: separate cameras, separate audio interfaces, separate switching hardware, separate software. Rode is betting that creators would rather have one company handle the entire signal chain. And with iPhone cameras now rivaling — and in some conditions surpassing — entry-level cinema cameras, the math starts to make sense.

Why iPhones, and Why Now

Apple’s aggressive camera improvements over the past several iPhone generations have made this moment possible. The iPhone 16 Pro shoots 4K at 120fps with ProRes support. Computational photography handles dynamic range and noise reduction that would’ve required expensive lighting rigs just five years ago. Rode is tapping into hardware that creators already own.

That’s the real play here. Barrier to entry drops dramatically when your camera is the phone in your pocket.

Rode isn’t the first to recognize this. Blackmagic Design released its iPhone-centric camera app in 2023, and companies like Camo and Reincubate have been turning iPhones into webcams for years. But Rode’s approach is more ambitious — it’s not just using the iPhone as a camera. It’s building an entire multi-camera production framework around it, tightly coupled with professional audio hardware.

The timing also aligns with a broader industry trend. Video podcasting has exploded. Spotify reported that video podcast consumption on its platform grew significantly in 2024, with shows like The Joe Rogan Experience and Call Her Daddy driving the format. YouTube has become the dominant podcast platform by consumption hours, according to data from Edison Research. Creators who once only needed a microphone now need cameras, lighting, and switching capability. Rode sees that gap and is filling it.

So what does this mean for the competitive field? Companies like Elgato, which has carved out a strong position in streaming hardware, will feel pressure. Same for Blackmagic, whose ATEM Mini switchers have become the default for small-studio video switching. Rode’s advantage is vertical integration — audio and video in one stack, from one company, with one interface.

There are open questions. Latency is the obvious one. Wireless video switching across multiple iPhones needs to be near-instantaneous to be usable for live production. Rode hasn’t disclosed full technical specs on latency or resolution limits during live switching, and until independent reviews confirm performance, professionals should reserve judgment. Thermal management on iPhones running continuous video capture is another concern — anyone who’s shot long-form video on an iPhone knows the heat warnings that can interrupt recording.

Pricing and availability details haven’t been fully confirmed as of this writing. Based on Rode’s existing product line — the RodeCaster Pro II retails for $699 and the RodeCaster Duo for $499 — expect the Video Core to land somewhere in the mid-hundreds, though that’s speculation until Rode makes an official announcement on pricing.

The Bigger Picture

Rode is making a calculated bet: the future of small-to-mid-scale video production runs through the smartphone. Not through dedicated cameras. Not through expensive capture hardware. Through the device everyone already carries.

If the execution matches the ambition, this could significantly reshape how independent creators and small studios approach video podcasting. The iPhone’s camera quality is already there. The missing piece was a production framework built around it. Rode thinks it’s built that piece.

Whether it delivers on that promise is the question that matters.
