Look out ladies … Robin Thicke is back on the market!
A representative for Thicke’s wife, actress Paula Patton , confirmed on Monday that the couple has mutually decided to end their nine-year marriage.
“We will always love each other and be best friends, however, we have mutually decided to separate at this time,” the couple exclusively told PEOPLE in a joint statement.
Thicke, 36, and Patton, 38, met when they were just teenagers, at the young ages of 14 and 16. Their relationship blossomed from there and in 2005 they were married. In 2010, Patton gave birth to their first and only child, Julian Fuego Thicke.
Thicke opened up about his relationship and his tendency to get a little jealous when she is lip locking in films, during an interview with Elle, in October 2013.
“Who wouldn’t? Those are my lips,” Thicke jokingly said when he was asked about his wife kissing other men. “I support her first. I never make it an issue while she’s filming. And then when she’s done, I ask a few questions. Oh yeah, you like that? Then it’s gone. It was harder when I was younger. Now I’d be like, Okay, come on home. Me and the baby are watching The Croods.”
At the time, he also revealed that he and Patton had no problem keeping the “spice” alive in their relationship. “The spice is not our problem,” he explained. “We’re overspiced. We could probably take a few spices off the shelf.” Despite the “spice”, Thicke said that they had their fights just like every other couple.
That’s personal. We both have unpredictable careers. We work in sensitive fields where people are talking about your height, your weight, your skin color, your talent, your Twitter followers. A lot of times, a fight is because you didn’t like the way the other person responded. You didn’t have time to help them properly. There are so many little things you can fight about when you’re in love. I’ve got a whole bunch of employees. I can’t bring my emotions around my work. You bring it home. Sometimes you take it out on the person you love the most. And then you just go, “I’m so sorry. What was I thinking. Let’s just watch Ron Burgundy again.
Thicke released his number one chart-topping song Blurred Lines last year, which was an instant success. Not only was the song a fan favorite, it was also nominated for several Grammy Awards.
Patton has starred in several movies including Mission: Impossible — Ghost Protocol, Idlewild, and Precious. She has also appeared in some of Thicke’s music videos including: Lost Without U and Love After War.
