Robin Roberts, who has been a much-loved anchor on Good Morning America for a while now, announced in June that she is suffering from myelodysplastic syndrome or MDS, and will need to undergo a bone marrow transplant. Luckily, her sister is an excellent match and will be able to donate the healthy tissue Roberts needs, but until then, she says she needs a break.
Although she wasn’t intending to take a leave from the show until the end of August or perhaps the beginning of September, Roberts says she’s not feeling well and wants to go ahead and rest.
“Well a full disclosure here, I’m not feeling too well,” Roberts, 51, announced on Tuesday. “In fact, I’m going to leave, and let you all do the rest of the program on your own. I’m going to take a little time off, just to get some vacay. I’ll see you in a couple of weeks.”
Roberts is a breast cancer survivor, and unfortunately even those who beat the disease can suffer from others which are triggered by the treatments used, such as chemotherapy. But Roberts is quick to point out that her doctors say she has an excellent chance at beating the MDS because she is young and in otherwise good health.
