You may recall that prior to Apple’s WWDC 2012 keynote last month there were rumors that they would unveil a retina display iMac. That, of course, didn’t happen. In fact, Apple didn’t announce any updates to the iMac at all. Later reports, though, suggested that the retina display iMac might be coming later this year, or perhaps next year. Finally, we learned last week that yes, Apple is preparing a new iMac for later this year, but that no, it will not have a retina display.

Well, hold onto your hats, because now we’re getting completely different information. According to a report today from DigiTimes, Apple’s supply chain is gearing up to start producing the new iMac for a possible October launch. According to this latest report it seems that yes, Virginia, there is a retina display on the new iMac models.

Now, it’s worth emphasizing that this report comes from DigiTimes. The fact is, DigiTimes has a record for accuracy that’s roughly on par with a stopped clock, give or take. On the other hand, last week’s report claiming that the new iMacs won’t have retina displays came from Instapaper creator Marco Arment, who said that “multiple sources” had told him that the iMac wouldn’t have a retina display. While it’s possible that Arment’s sources are wrong and DigiTimes’s sources are right, you won’t catch me betting on those odds.
