Real Madrid made history on Saturday when they beat local rival Atlético Madrid 4-1 in extra time to claim the Champions League title.

To be fair to Atlético, it was a scoreline that heavily favored Real Madrid, perhaps suggesting a level of dominance that simply did not occur for most of the game.

For the full 90 minutes of the Champions League final it was Atlético Madrid leading with a 1-0 scoreline. For many, it appeared to be enough to allow the club to claim the trophy.

It was in the early seconds of extra time that Real Madrid vice-captain Sergio Ramos came through with a miraculous header. The 1-1 score allowed the match to finish level. It was in extra time that three more decisive goals were scored, albeit quite late in extra time. The Ronaldo penalty was probably also adding insult to injury.

However “unfair” the outcome may seem to Atlético, it was Real who took their destiny into their own hands and achieved a dream that was more than a decade old: La Decima.

Real Madrid became the first and only European football club to win the Champion’s League ten times.

From Saturday evening all through Sunday, Real Madrid and much of the city (the non-Atlético supporting portion, anyway) celebrated the historic achievement.

The post-game celebration included some memorable moments.

This included the crashing of Real Madrid manager Carlo Ancelotti’s post-game press conference. The usually stern faced Ancelotti couldn’t repress a smile when they came charging in.

They even got him to sing along for a few moments. Then it was back to business as usual.

The Real Madrid celebration at Celebes featured a rare treat as team captain Iker Casillas allowed vice-captain Sergio Ramos the opportunity to tie the Real Madrid flag around the beloved statue of Phrygian goddess Cybele.

Despite hundreds of thousands of people celebrating until the early morning hours, everyone was prepared to partake in continued “La Decima” celebrations the next day at the Santiago Bernabeu Stadium. The video of the additional festivities is available via Real Madrid’s Youtube channel:

Clearly joy over the massive achievement overrode any desire or need for sleep.
