Today’s Google Doodle honors a man who’s responsible for dozens upon dozens of classic product designs from the early 1930s to the late 1970s. You’ve probably seen his work over an dover again but didn’t know whom to attribute. On Google’s homepage, you’ll see what appears to be a Google train paying tribute to Raymond Loewy.
Loewy, one of the most prolific industrials designers of his time, was born in France but soon moved the the U.S. and spent most of his professional career there.
Over the course of that 70-year career, Loewy designed such Americana as the slimmer Coca-Cola bottle, the Greyhound Scenicruiser bus, Coca-Cola vending machines, Lucky Strike cigarette packaging, and the Studebaker Avanti.
He’s also responsible for designing various other automobiles, locomotives, and electronics. He even got into logo design, coming up with company logos for Exxon, TWA, Shell, and BP.
One of his most notable designs, however, is the one that Google has chosen to highlight with their Doodle – the Pennsylvania Railroad S1 steam locomotive.
Loewy died in 1986 in Monte Carlo, a few year after his retirement. Today’s Doodle celebrates what would be Loewy’s 120th birthday.
