Forecasters now see an 82% chance that El Niño will take hold by the end of July. The odds of it becoming a strong or very strong event have climbed to 67%. That informal label, super El Niño, signals Pacific sea surface temperatures in the key Niño 3.4 region rising at least 2 degrees Celsius above average.

But. The numbers keep shifting upward. Last month the chance of a very strong event sat lower. Now it approaches one in three for peak months between November and January. Some computer models run by the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts hint at anomalies exceeding 3 degrees Celsius late this year. That would rival or top the 1877 and 2015-16 benchmarks.

Fortune reported the rapid heating in recent months has pushed those probabilities higher. Brian K. Sullivan noted the phenomenon originates in the Pacific yet ripples across continents. Trade winds weaken. Warm water spreads eastward. Atmospheric patterns bend. Rain falls where it usually does not. Dryness settles elsewhere.

Peruvian fishermen first noticed the warm Christmas waters centuries ago. They called it El Niño de Navidad. Today meteorologists track the broader El Niño-Southern Oscillation cycle. It swings between warm and cool phases every two to seven years. The last full event ran through 2023-2024. This one builds faster than many anticipated.

Michelle L’Heureux, a scientist at NOAA’s Climate Prediction Center, said stronger development depends on atmosphere and ocean changes syncing through summer. “A stronger El Niño is more likely if changes in the atmosphere continue to sync with changes in the tropical Pacific Ocean this summer, like seeing winds near the equator weaken at the same time ocean temperatures rise,” she told CNN.

The center gives two-in-three odds that peak strength will register strong or very strong. Ninety-six percent chance it persists through winter. Uncertainty remains on exact intensity. Still the trend points one direction.

Global temperatures could follow. El Niño releases stored ocean heat into the atmosphere. Scientists expect 2027 to challenge recent heat records. The planet already sits near 1.5 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels. Add this event and new highs become probable. NOAA has called 2024 one of the five warmest years even before full effects arrive. BBC Weather highlighted that a very strong episode might add 0.2 degrees Celsius to the global annual average.

Liz Stephens, professor at the University of Reading, told the BBC “we’re probably looking at record global temperatures next year, especially if this is a very strong El Niño event.” The combination with background warming raises stakes.

Daniel Swain, climate scientist at UCLA, warned in a Eos.org report that modern human history has never seen a strong El Niño against such warm baseline conditions. “It would not be surprising to see some unprecedented global impacts by later in 2026 into 2027 in terms of flood, drought, and wildfire-related extremes,” he said.

Regional effects vary sharply. Australia, Southeast Asia, northern United States, Canada and parts of India face hotter, drier conditions. Drought risk climbs. Wildfires gain fuel. Monsoon disruptions in India threaten rice and other staples. Southeast Africa, the Caribbean and Amazon basin could see reduced rainfall that strains water supplies and crops.

Conversely southern United States, Chile, Argentina and sections of East Africa often turn wetter. Flooding becomes a larger threat. Heavy rains can overwhelm infrastructure. California might receive beneficial winter precipitation that aids almonds and avocados yet also triggers debris flows and coastal erosion.

Pacific typhoon activity typically increases with more fuel from warmer waters. Atlantic hurricane season faces suppression from higher wind shear. NOAA projects eight to 14 named storms instead of the average 14. Fewer systems. The ones that form can still prove intense.

Food systems sit in the crosshairs. Drought hits wheat, palm oil, coffee and sugar regions. Fisheries suffer when nutrient-rich upwelling weakens off Peru. Anchovy stocks decline. Global prices face upward pressure. The New York Times reported countries already preparing for possible shortages as the pattern emerges atop dangerous planetary heating.

Economists have tallied past costs. Dartmouth College researchers estimated the 1997-98 El Niño alone generated $5.7 trillion in lost global gross domestic product over five years. Shipping through the Panama Canal slows when water levels drop. Hydroelectric output falls. Electricity demand for cooling spikes. Blackouts loom in stressed grids.

Humanitarian consequences stretch further. Historic super events have linked to famine. The 1877 episode contributed to millions of deaths. Modern warnings from the United Nations and others focus on vulnerable populations in Africa, Asia and Latin America. The Washington Post noted correlations with food shortages, water stress and even civil conflict in tropical nations.

Scientists debate exactly how greenhouse gases alter the ENSO cycle. Earlier models suggested more frequent El Niños in a warmer world. Yet recent decades featured more La Niña dominance. Agreement grows, however, that higher baseline temperatures amplify impacts. Warmer air holds more moisture so downpours intensify. Dry spells turn harsher.

Adam Scaife, a climate scientist, told Phys.org that “the impacts of this El Niño—on things like rainfall and of course temperature—are riding on top of climate change, and could well be larger than anything we’ve seen in the past.”

Forecasters stress no guarantees. Every event differs. Models show wide spreads this early. Yet signals have grown more impressive month by month. Sea temperatures rise rapidly. Atmospheric conditions align.

Commodity markets, utilities, disaster planners and governments watch closely. Preparation matters. Reservoirs need management. Crops require adjusted planting schedules. Humanitarian aid organizations map vulnerable zones.

And the broader context looms. This super El Niño candidate arrives as the planet has already shattered temperature records in recent years. The interaction does not create the underlying warming. It stacks atop it. Outcomes could set new marks for extremes.

Whether it reaches the strongest on record or settles at strong still carries consequences. Drought in one breadbasket. Floods in another. Heat that compounds existing stress. The coming seasons will test forecasts and resilience alike.
