Sony making smartphones PlayStation certified was one of the coolest things the company announced last year. The functionality has been brought to Sony’s phones, but it may soon be coming to HTC phones.

Pocket Lint’s sources reveal that HTC is going to be on the first manufacturers to get PlayStation certification for their smartphones and tablets. The sources say that Sony and HTC will announce the partnership later this month, possibly at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, Spain.

Most notably, PlayStation certification would bring PSone titles to Android powered devices. The titles currently include Crash Bandicoot and Syphon Filter among a few others. With more devices becoming PlayStation certified, there should be more PSone titles hitting smartphones. Just imagine a world where you can play Final Fantasy VII on a phone during a morning commute.

PSone titles aren’t the only feature that comes with PlayStation certification. It’s all part of the PlayStation Suite which is a set of tools created by Sony to let developers easily port games between smartphones and their soon to be released handheld, the PlayStation Vita.

Having the PlayStation branding should help HTC prove their a major player in the smartphone market. Apple seems to constantly be at the forefront of mobile gaming while Android games seeming to be not as popular. PlayStation certification should help Android prove it's a serious platform for games.

For an example of what PlayStation games look like on mobile devices, here’s Crash Bandicoot running on the Xperia Play:
