Netflix and Sony today announced that the PlayStation 3 now has more people streaming Netflix content than any other device. The statistic take in to account all other game consoles and set-top boxes throughout the world.
“PS3 is our largest TV-connected platform in terms of Netflix viewing, and this year, at times, even surpassed the PC in hours of Netflix enjoyment to become our No. 1 platform overall,” said Reed Hastings, Netflix CEO. “PS3 is a natural fit for Netflix in terms of developing and first deploying our most advanced features. We can transparently update our application with new features on a daily basis, and through the free PlayStation Network, people around the world can sign up for Netflix directly from their PS3.”
Though the Xbox 360 was the first console to offer Netflix’s streaming service, Sony today is bragging that the PlayStation 3 was the first to offer Netflix in 1080p with 5.1 surround sound and alternate audio options. Sony recently made Netflix streaming available on the PlayStation Vita, Sony’s newest handheld PlayStation gaming device.
“The PlayStation and Netflix communities both share a strong passion for high quality entertainment,” said Jack Tretton, CEO and President of SCEA. “Netflix provides a fantastic experience for watching TV shows and movies on PS3, and our joint development will continue to produce innovations for our customers that further demonstrate PS3 as the true home for entertainment in the living room.”
This news begs the question of why PlayStation 3 owners are streaming so much Netflix. Sony only last month announced that PlayStation 3 sales have hit 70 million units, catching up to Microsoft’s Xbox 360 sales. While Xbox owners have had Netflix streaming for longer, however, a subscription to Xbox LIVE is required to access the service on Microsoft’s console, explaining the PlayStation’s Netflix prominence. As for the Wii, which “won” the last console generation in terms of unit sales, the number of Wii’s collecting dust next to another console probably accounts for it’s lower Netflix streaming rates.
