But behind the user-friendly interface lay a critical vulnerability that silently broadcasted the private data—including personal photos—of its entire user base, estimated at over 18 million people.

The incident serves as a stark case study in the high-stakes, fast-moving world of AI application development, where the race for market share can leave fundamental security practices dangerously behind. It exposes a gaping hole not just in one developer’s infrastructure, but in the trust consumers place in the curated digital marketplaces governed by tech giants like Apple Inc.

In early February, Sen discovered a publicly accessible database linked to the app. He promptly reported his findings to the security journalism team at Cybernews, which launched an investigation that confirmed the severity of the exposure. In this case, the developer, identified on the App Store as “BG.Studio,” allegedly failed to implement basic authentication protocols on their database.

This oversight effectively left the front door to their digital vault unlocked. The lack of a clear communication channel or a timely fix amplified the risk manifold. In response to the incident and the developer’s inaction, security experts and publications alike, including Supercar Blondie, issued strong warnings, advising users to immediately delete the app to prevent further data transmission.

Apple’s Walled Garden Under Scrutiny

The incident inevitably casts a shadow on Apple’s vaunted App Store review process. Apple has built its brand on a reputation for security and user privacy, often referring to its tightly controlled ecosystem as a “walled garden” that protects users from the malware and data-harvesting practices more common on other platforms. Yet, an app with such a fundamental server-side security flaw was not only approved but allowed to flourish, attracting millions of downloads.
