Apple’s AirTags are in the news again for all the wrong reasons, with a truck dead after an AirTag was used to track him.

According to KSAT, Andrew John Herrera stole a truck from a San Antonio North Side home. After calling the police, the owners used an AirTag that was in the vehicle to track down the thief.

When the truck owners caught up to Herrera in a shopping center, a confrontation ensued that resulted in Herrera being shot in the head and killed. The police have ruled the death a homicide, but it’s still not clear if the shooter will face charges. Some accounts seem to indicate Herrera may have reached for a weapon of his own, prompting the truck’s owner to shoot him while he was still in the truck.

The SAPD stressed the importance of citizens letting the police do their job.

“I know that it’s frustrating, but please do not take matters into your own hands,” said Officer Nick Soliz, an SAPD public information officer.

This incident is the latest in a series of troublesome issues with AirTag usage. The diminutive devices have become “the weapon of choice of stalkers and abusers,” with at least two people murdered in cases where AirTags were used to stalk them. A Cincinnati police officer was recently fired after an investigation revealed he had also used AirTags to stalk an ex.

It’s safe to say this latest incident is not going to help Apple’s AirTag problem.
