  • Survival horror fans should consider today not only Halloween, but the day that spurred hope in the hearts of many that the near-abandoned genre might be making a comeback. In addition to the Amnesia: A Machine For Pigs trailer released today, another trailer for a new survival horror IP has been released.

Red Barrels Games today released a four-minute trailer for its upcoming Outlast. The game will be a first-person survival horror game set in a creepy asylum. From the Red Barrels website:

In the remote mountains of Colorado, horrors wait inside Mount Massive Asylum. A long-abandoned home for the mentally ill, recently re-opened by the “research and charity” branch of the transnational Murkoff Corporation, has been operating in strict secrecy… until now.

Acting on a tip from an inside source, independent journalist Miles Upshur breaks into the facility, and what he discovers walks a terrifying line being science and religion, nature and something else entirely. Once inside, his only hope of escape lies with the terrible truth at the heart of Mount Massive.

As seen in the video, the “monsters” in the game aren’t simply zombies or space aliens, but appear more human-like. The game will take a page from Amnesia: The Dark Descent and force players to avoid enemies rather than take them down.

“There are already a lot of great games out there about terrifying monsters that eat brains; we want Outlast’s to be scary because you’ll know the enemies you face still have them,” said Philippe Morin, co-founder of Red Barrels.

Red Barrels was founded by self-declared industry veterans from Ubisoft and Naughty Dog who worked on titles such as Prince of Persia, Assassin’s Creed, Splinter Cell, and Uncharted.

“Our team has a lot of previous experience creating big, blockbuster games,” said David Chateauneuf, co-founder of Red Barrels. “We’re all really excited to see what kind of fear-based emotional rollercoaster we can build on our own!”
