OpenAI is pushing ahead with its first smartphone, an ‘AI agent phone’ designed to handle tasks through intelligent agents rather than traditional apps. Mass production could start as early as the first half of 2027. That’s according to Ming-Chi Kuo, the analyst whose supply-chain insights often predict Apple’s moves. He posted the update on X, noting the accelerated timeline from an earlier 2028 target. MacRumors broke the news, citing Kuo’s note that combined shipments for 2027 and 2028 might hit 30 million units if everything proceeds smoothly.

Kuo argues full control over hardware and software offers the only path to a true AI agent service. The phone shifts interaction from app launches to context-aware task completion. Picture telling your device to plan a trip; it books flights, reserves hotels, and checks weather without you tapping through menus. Two dedicated AI processors will manage workloads like vision and language at once. Fast LPDDR6 memory and UFS 5.0 storage back it up.
