  • Seriously, are the pencils and art brushes possessed by the ghost of Vincent Van Gogh at Maryetta School, in Oklahoma? For the second year in a row, the school will represent Oklahoma in the national Doodle 4 Google contest the search engine giant has put on for the past five years.

Janessa Chastain, an eight year old second grader has won the opportunity to pit her art against the other greats in the country. Last year, Katie Stephenson, a student from Maryetta was a finalist as well. This is an extremely impressive feat considering over 100,000+ submissions were entered, which were eventually whittled down to 50 state winners. It looks like Oklahoma isn’t just housing a football powerhouse, but an art school powerhouse as well.

The grand prize is a $30,000 college scholarship, and $50,000 for the winning school to purchase computers. The doodle will also be featured on Google’s front page and on the 64-count of Crayola crayons box. This contest really has grown since its first year.

As you can see above, Janessa really has some talent. She’s eight years old, and can already produce better art than I can at 28. You can vote for her work here, and the works of the other grade classes here.

If you’re wondering where the inspiration for her art came from, she says, “If I could travel in time, I’d visit Japan, the Land of the Cherry Blossoms. I would like to go to a Cherry Blossom celebration and learn about Japanese culture, customs and people.
