What would you do if you found $120,000?
This is the question that an off-duty California Highway Patrol officer had to ask herself when she found two bank bags full of money totaling more than $120,000 on the side of the road.
The officer, who has asked not to be identified by the media, was driving along Concord Boulevard in September when she had to swerve her personal vehicle to avoid driving over the two bags. She turned her car around and picked up the bags in the road. That is when she realized that they were full of money.
“I opened it up just enough to see that it was hundred dollar bills … I was like, oh my god, it didn’t feel real,” she said.
The 20-year-old sergeant reported her findings to the Concord Police, who were able to track down the rightful owners.
According to News Max, the owner was a 31-year-old man who had reported losing his life savings.
“It was the right thing to do. I am paid to uphold the law and it’s my job to set the example, whether I’m working or not,” the officer said, when asked why she chose to return the money. “I am happy to hear the rightful owner was identified and that the money has been returned.”
“There was no one on that street after I had come back, nobody would have known,” she said. “But that’s what determines a person’s integrity, it’s what you do when nobody is looking.”
