The latest web advertisement for President Obama’s campaign makes the suggestion that Republican presidential hopeful Mitt Romney would not have ordered the strikes on Bin Laden. In order to drive the point home, the video uses previously-unreleased Bill Clinton interview footage from “The Road We’ve Traveled”. In the clip, Clinton says that Obama “took the harder, and the more honorable path” when deciding whether or not to order the strike.
The ad also references an AP interview with Romney is which he claims it doesn’t make sense to spend billions of dollars to track down and eliminate one individual. Not surprisingly, the clip was released to coincide with the one-year anniversary of Osama Bin Laden’s death. The notoriously elusive terrorist was killed on May 1st, 2011 when a team of Navy SEALs raided his compound.
Romney’s camp, of course, wasn’t about to let this slide without tossing their own thoughts and feelings into the mix.
“It’s now sad to see the Obama campaign seek to use an event that unified our country to once again divide us, in order to try to distract voters’ attention from the failures of his administration,” campaign spokesperson Andrea Saul explained. “With 23 million Americans struggling for work, our national debt soaring, and household budgets being squeezed like never before, Mitt Romney is focused on strengthening America at home and abroad.”
The ad, which clocks in at approximately 90 seconds, relies heavily on Clinton’s political clout to get its message across. “He had to decide. And that’s what you hire the president to do. You hire the president to make the calls when no one else can do it,” the former president continued. At one point in the video, the on-screen texts poses the question: “What path would Mitt Romney have taken?”
And that, my friends, will be the million dollar question for a lot of people.
Reactions to the ad on Twitter have been quite engaging. A varied selection of responses have been collected in the space below.
Obama is NOT playing fear card regarding the killing of Osama Bin Laden. He’s playing the success card! He’s the one who brought him down!
@RussOnPolitics and for team Obama to somehow suggest that Romney wouldn’t have given the order is laughable at best, a lie at worst.
#Obama is simply dynamite. http://t.co/s446RJQW
