Much has been said and speculated about President Obama’s “evolving” – and yes, it’s a journalistic requisite to put that word in quotations – stance on gay marriage over the past two years. However, today in an interview with with ABC News, President Obama stated for the first time his unequivocal support for same-sex marriage.
“At a certain point, I’ve just concluded that for me personally it is important for me to go ahead and affirm that I think same-sex couples should be able to get married,” President Obama said today, less than 24 hours after North Carolina became the 30th state in the United States to adopt a constitutional amendment exclusively defining marriage as a union between a man and a woman.
He punctuated his statement shortly thereafter on his official Twitter account.
“Same-sex couples should be able to get married.”—President Obama
As you’d expect if you were watching Twitter last night after North Carolina’s Amendment 1 passed, or if you’ve ever looked at Twitter even once in your life, the Twitterati, as is their wont, went ablaze with a spectrum of responses to the President’s declaration.
Ok Mr. President you said the right thing. Now can you DO the right thing? Action > words. #makeithappen
Fox Nation says ‘Obama Declares War on Marriage.’ They left out the word ‘Inequality.’

“Marty, you’ve got to go back to 2012 and stop Obama from supporting gay marriage, or your parent’s love means nothing!” @ericschroeck
Cynic in me reminds that Obama just got back to where he was in 1996. Rest of me says: good 4 u, Mr. President. And thanks. #historymade

Bums me out to see people acting proud of Obama today. “Supporting” gay marriage is just a PR tactic to kow-tow to the left and youth votes.
I just donated to the Obama campaign. Thanks, Mr. President, for supporting marriage equality. https://t.co/XhF9MTiW #evolvedalready
