One of the key points of the upcoming election–something which has been debated at great length by both sides of the political spectrum–is the issue of same-sex marriage and whether or not it will be considered legal, with the same legal rights of heterosexual couples. Vice President Joe Biden recently talked about his support of gay rights on “Meet The Press“, saying he recognizes that times are changing and that everyone deserves the same legal right to marry.
An amendment voted in on Tuesday–in which voters in North Carolina ushered in a ban on same-sex marriage and civil unions–could prove to be significant come election time, since North Carolina is a key swing state. The amendment was given about 61% of the vote, and supporters say it is their goal to make amendments such as these harder to overturn.
News of the amendment has been quite incendiary, sparking debate and backlash on social media networks.
North Carolina passed Amendment One. Unbelievable.
The fact that Amendment 1 was on the ballot was obscene. The fact that it passed is disgraceful. Shame.
To all the people hating North Carolina right now, please remember the third of the population that voted against amendment 1.
North Carolina, this ugly amendment has no place in your Beautiful state. It’s incongruous. Fix it young people.
Before today the last time North Carolina voted on a marriage amendment it was to ban interracial marriage. Rights should never be voted on.
I love how everyone “hates” north carolina now because of an amendment they more than likely didnt even know about until 2 days ago
Sorry, North Carolina, that the First Amendment wasn’t enough to stop the passage of Amendment 1.
