Vision Research has just released its Phantom v642 ultra high-speed video camera, which can capture footage at almost 6,000 frames per second, which equates to super slow motion. Check out the video below to get an idea of what processed 5,850 fps footage looks like:

The new Phantom was designed for broadcasters, who will have the ability to slow down sports action up to 90 times. The v642 has a 2K imager, similar to what will reportedly go into the Kickstarty new Bolex D16, and can record full resolution 2560 x 1600 images at 1,450 frames per second, 1080p footage at 2,560 fps, or 720p at 5,850 fps. The camera has 32GB of on-board DRAM, and dual HD-SDI ports. The v642 can record and play clips back at the same time, so there is no need to swap out drives while on the job, which is an upgrade from the Phantom v641.

The new Phantom also features a multi-matrix color corrector, which allows it to better match the look of footage from standard broadcast cameras used alongside. Essentially, the new Phantom will be better suited for use in live sports broadcasts, so viewers might be seeing some ultra-slow motion in TV broadcasts in the near future.

In related news, Nikon recently demoed its highly anticipated D800 using Phantom HD Gold footage, in an apparent accident, at a trade show in Bangkok. The Phantom goes for between $100-$150K – a bit more than the $2995.95 MSRP of the D800.
