  • Netflix finally made its official announcement about upcoming original series Narcos. It’s described as “an all-new take on the amazing story of the Medellin Cartel, once the world’s most ambitious and violent trafficking organization.”

We first learned about the project over a year ago. It was originally reported to be set for a 2014 release, but Netflix has it pegged for early next year now. It will begin filming in Columbia soon.

We learned from Deadline this week that the show will star Wagner Moura as Pablo Escobar. Netflix’s announcement confirms this. The report also said Chris Brancato will run the show. He is listed as an executive producer along with Eric Newman, Doug Miro and director Jose Padilha in Netflix’s announcement.

“Jose and Wagner together created one of the most sophisticated and chilling portraits of criminality and official corruption ever in their Elite Squad movies,” said Netflix Chief Content Officer Ted Sarandos. “Their version of the Escobar saga will be like nothing ever seen before.”

“Our idea is to tell the true story of how cocaine became such a huge problem in the U.S. and Europe – and how it all started here in Medellin,” said Padilha.

Gaumont International Television, with whom Netflix has worked on Hemlock Grove, is behind Narcos.

“We are so thrilled to be working with Jose and Eric on this gripping and timeless story,” said CEO Katie O’Connell. “Netflix is the perfect partner to launch this series and we are happy to be working once again with the amazing team there.”
