  • Netflix, as you may know, is greatly expanding its comedy offerings. This has been coming in the form of both TV shows and stand-up comedy (not to mention Netflix’s original series). Last week, Netflix made headlines with a an upcoming special from Aziz Ansari.

When that news came out, the New York Times reported that the company also had specials from comedians Marc Maron and Kathleen Madigan in the works. While we still don’t know much about Maron’s, the Madigan special will be available on 9/11.

The description for the special (via Netflix) is as follows:

    Kathleen Madigan: Madigan Again (2013)

Kathleen Madigan drops in on Detroit to deliver material derived from time spent with her Irish Catholic Midwest family, eating random pills out of her mother’s purse, touring Afghanistan, and her love of John Denver and the Lunesta butterfly.

We don’t expect Netflix will make a big marketing push for this one like it will reportedly do with the Ansari special as well as a since reported special and “docu-series” from Russell Peters. These are said to be getting promotion akin to Netflix’s own shows like House of Cards, Orange is the New Black, etc.

Netflix has released other exclusive stand-up specials from John Hodgman, Rob Schneider, Doug Stanhope and Mike Birbiglia, which have come with next to zero promotion.

While Ansari’s special will be a Netflix exclusive for six months, it will be moving beyond the Netflix realm as a download option will eventually become available. This is not unlike other Netflix-exclusive content. Even House of Cards has gone on to a DVD release and availability on Amazon Instant Video since its initial release. Orange is the New Black will also be coming to DVD.
