Please, stop. Nancy Reagan is not dead.

Apparently this latest celebrity death hoax got started when a Facebook page titled “R.I.P. Nancy Reagan” got nearly one million likes. The About page of the account said the following:

“At about 11 a.m. ET on Friday (October 24, 2014), our beloved politician Nancy Reagan passed away. Nancy Reagan was born on July 6, 1921 in New York. She will be missed but not forgotten. Please show your sympathy and condolences by commenting on and liking this page.”

The statement appears to be an intentional attempt to deceive people, giving specifics like time of death. It worked. The “news” of Reagan’s death spread like wildfire, until her own representatives finally stepped in with a statement.

“She joins the long list of celebrities who have been victimized by this hoax. She’s still alive and well, stop believing what you see on the Internet.”

The long list of those recently rumored to be dead, and whose “deaths” fooled a lot of people for a while, include:

Betty White – White’s death rumor was gleefully started by Empire News with a cleverly-worded headline.

Jennifer Lawrence – This death hoax was worded almost exactly like Reagan’s, which makes it look like someone is having a blast with this.

Benicio del Toro – The actor was said to have died of a drug overdose, but reps have said otherwise.

Dwayne Johnson – Was said to have died filming Fast & Furious 7, but posted Instagram photo of himself in the gym to disprove the rumors.

Wayne Knight – “Newman” was said to have died in a car wreck, but tweeted to say he was alive and well.

Bob Seger – The “Against the Wind” singer was confused with folk singer Pete Seeger, who did die this year.

In what may qualify as irony, Nancy Reagan’s famed astrologer, whose influence in White House scheduling during the Reagan years caused quite a scandal, did die today.
