  • A tragic suicide at the Mormon Temple in Las Vegas on Tuesday night is revealed to be that of 26-year old Scott Greer Bybee, the son of 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals Judge Jay Bybee.

Officials say they received a call from the Bybee family saying they feared Scott would harm himself at the temple; when they arrived on the scene, they found his body in the courtyard of the temple. Bybee didn’t threaten anyone there and the temple wasn’t evacuated, but services were canceled for the rest of the evening.

“It will take time for Jay, Dianna, and their other family members, to begin the healing process, but they will be grateful for your prayers and good wishes on their behalf,” Judge Milan D.Smith, a friend of the family, said.”While Jay and Dianna mourn for Scott, and grieve for their own loss, they are grateful that he is finally released from his sufferings. They have faith that he is in a better place.”

Bybee reportedly suffered from depression, but a motive was not released and it hasn’t been reported whether or not Bybee left a suicide note.

Jay Bybee was nominated to the 9th Circuit Court under George W. Bush and came under fire for authoring documents which gave interrogators permission to use torture techniques during questioning, including waterboarding.
