  • Monica Lewinsky is now opening up about her scandalous affair with former President Bill Clinton. In an article for Vanity Fair, Lewinsky says that her affair with Clinton was consensual.

News of the scandal broke out in 1998 when Lewinsky was working as an intern at the White House. She was 22 years old then, and the affair resulted in an investigation that led to Clinton’s impeachment.

Lewinsky is now 40 years old and has a master’s degree in social psychology. In the article, Lewinsky also says that she regrets the affair. “I, myself, deeply regret what happened between me and President Clinton. Let me say it again: I. Myself. Deeply. Regret. What. Happened.”

Lewinsky also said that although the relationship was consensual, abuse came after news broke out as she was used as a scapegoat in order to protect the former president’s position.

She also shared that she has had big challenges during job interviews which lead her to turn down job offers that would have earned her millions of dollars.

The former White House intern decided to share her story now, as she was urged to do something after learning about Tyler Clementi’s suicide. Clementi, an 18-year-old Freshman from Rutgers University, jumped to death in 2010 after he was caught on camera kissing another man in his dorm room. The video was streamed online, too.

Marcia Lewis, was fearful that her daughter, Monica, would also turn to suicide because of the scandal. She said that she never attempted to kill herself, but had suicidal thoughts when the scandal emerged.

By sharing her story, Lewinsky hopes to help others who are going through humiliation and moments of desperation.

Lewinsky’s full story will be published on May 13.
