I’m sure somebody will be happy about this, but EA has announced a sequel to its Medal of Honor reboot.
In what may be the most uninspiring title in the already uninspiring pool of military shooter titles, the new Medal of Honor will come with the subtitle “Warfighter.” Danger Close, the developers of the first game, will be back on development duty for this new game. While DICE, the creators of Battlefield, worked on the multiplayer for the first Medal of Honor, Danger Close will be handling it in “Warfighter.”
More details will be coming in the next few weeks, but I think we can agree that the next Medal of Honor will have to do something more interesting than just be a modern military shooter. The original Medal of Honor games were unique as they focused more on the history of the conflicts. It has lost that appeal with recent games due to its attempt at trying to grab the Call of Duty player.
The reboot of Medal of Honor saw EA trying to apply some semblance of realism to modern conflicts, but it ended up feeling like a Call of Duty clone. The game sold 2.36 million units on the Xbox 360 alone with it selling about 5 million across all platforms. Those sales warrant a sequel, but EA needs to do more if they want to better compete with Call of Duty and their own Battlefield franchise.
The game did well enough with critics as well, but most said that it wasn’t ready to compete with the likes of Call of Duty yet. We’ll see soon enough if EA and Danger Close can up the ante.
EA obviously has enough faith in the franchise to keep it going and in that spirit has released the first promo image to get the hype going.
Fork Parker, CFO of Devolver Digital, expresses the feelings of gamers everywhere over the new Call of Duty title:
Just when you thought FPS titles couldn’t get more generic EA craps out a name like MOH: Warfighter.
I’m getting a trademark on “First Person: Shooter” as a game title before EA does.
Do you think EA should keep trying to find success with the Medal of Honor franchise? Or should they just stick to Battlefield? Let us know in the comments.
