According to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, over 2 million dehumidifiers have been recalled, due to a fire risk. Over 2.2 million units comprise the domestic recall, along with another 52,500 from Canada.
The faulty dehumidifiers, which can overheat, smoke and catch fire, were manufactured in China by GreeUSA, and are branded as Danby, De’Longhi, Fedders, Fellini, Frigidaire, Gree, Kenmore, Norpole, Premiere, Seabreeze, SoleusAir and SuperClima. No injuries have yet been reported, but 165 incidents, including 46 fires have been logged, with $2.15 million in property damage.
The units in question were sold at AAFES, HH Gregg, Home Depot, Kmart, Lowe’s, Menards, Mills Fleet Farm, Sam’s Club, Sears and other stores nationwide and in Canada, and online at Amazon and Ebay, between January 2005 and August 2013, for between roughly $110 and $400.
One can determine if their dehumidifier is included in the recall, by checking the name plate sticker on the back, side or front of the unit. Then one should enter the brand name, model number and date code online at the Gree recall site. If a dehumidifier in question is affected, Gree will issue a return package, along with a full refund. Consumers can contact Gree at 866-853-2802, with any further questions. The CPSC says consumers should quickly unplug any affected units.
