Mark Cuban is warning US consumers to stock up on consumables, warning that tariffs will cause prices to go up, even if the goods are US-made.

President Trump unveiled sweeping tariffs on a host of countries, including a 10% baseline tariff on all goods. The remaining tariffs are what Trump is calling “reciprocal tariffs,” coming in at half of whatever import tax a country is levying against the US.

Cuban is warning that basic consumables are about to experience significant price hikes, leading him to recommend that consumers stock up now. Cuban made the recommendation in a post on Bluesky.

It’s not a bad idea to go to the local Walmart or big box retailer and buy lots of consumables now. From toothpaste to soap, anything you can find storage space for, buy before they have to replenish inventory.

Even if it’s made in the USA , they will jack up the price and blame it on tariffs.

President Trump has made tariffs the cornerstone of his economic policy in this second term, putting to the test a theory that most economists say will not work. There is growing concern the tariffs will lead to a recession, as companies are forced to pass on the added expense to the consumer, effectively reducing consumers’ spending power.

Cuban hits on another potential pitfall, however, namely the likelihood that companies will use the tariffs as an excuse to raise prices across the board, regardless of whether the goods in question are made in the US or not.

Unfortunately, corporate America does not have a good track record of not gouging consumers whenever the opportunity presents itself, making it unlikely that Cuban’s prediction is wrong.
