Hall-of-Famer Lou Brock is recovering after surgery to amputate the lower portion of his left leg.

According to MLB.com, Brock suffered from an infection related to diabetes.

From MLB.com:

A regular presence around Busch Stadium and at the Cardinals’ Spring Training site in Jupiter, Fla., Brock was hospitalized “a couple of weeks ago.” Doctors had to amputate the left leg just below the knee.

According to family spokespeople, Brock is already getting around with a walker and will be fitted with a prosthetic.

Lou Brock spent 19 years in professional baseball – the majority of that time playing left field for the St. Louis Cardinals. In 1977, Brock broke Ty Cobb’s all-time stolen base record. He was a six-time All-Star.

Brock finished his career with over 3,000 hits and 938 stolen bases.

He currently works as special instructor for the Cardinals organization.
